Ahi tuna steak, also known as yellowfin tuna steak, is a popular and delicious seafood dish that features thick cuts of fresh tuna seared to perfection. The tender and flavorful tuna steak is often served rare or medium-rare, showcasing the natural richness of the fish.

  • 2 Ahi tuna steaks (about 6-8 ounces each), fresh and sushi-grade
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of lime juice or lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish (optional)
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice or lemon juice, honey or maple syrup, minced garlic, grated ginger, salt, and pepper to create a marinade.
  2. Place the Ahi tuna steaks in a shallow dish or resealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the steaks, ensuring they are well coated. Let them marinate in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to 1 hour, turning the steaks halfway through.
  3. Preheat a grill, grill pan, or skillet over high heat.
  4. Remove the marinated tuna steaks from the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes.
  5. Lightly oil the grill grates or skillet to prevent sticking. Place the tuna steaks on the preheated cooking surface.
  6. Cook the tuna steaks for about 1-2 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the steaks and your desired level of doneness. For a medium-rare result, aim for a sear on the outside while keeping the center pink and rare. Avoid overcooking to maintain the tenderness of the tuna.
  7. Once cooked to your liking, remove the tuna steaks from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
  8. Slice the tuna steaks against the grain into thin slices. This allows for a tender and easy-to-eat texture.
  9. Optional: Sprinkle the sliced tuna steaks with sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish.
  10. Serve the Ahi tuna steak slices as an appetizer or main course. It pairs well with a variety of sides such as steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, or a fresh salad.
